Why we’re here!

Hi! I’m David Ball and welcome to my radio station based here in Viseu, Portugal!

I was a teenager in the States when FM was just starting to take over. My friends and I would drive around at night, tuning in to stations like WLS out of Chicago, WBZ in Boston and WNEW in New York. It felt like the whole world was coming through the speakers. That’s when I got hooked on every kind of music you can imagine. From The Grateful Dead to the Blues greats, Burnside to Janis Joplin and everyone part of that magical time.

Listening to those old DJs, I started to realize something: the good ones weren’t just shuffling random songs. They were blending genres in a way that told a story. There was this DJ in Washington, D.C., called “The Weasel” on WGTB — he could move from one style to another so smoothly that the whole show felt like one long mood. That’s when it clicked for me: “That’s what I want to do. I want to be that person behind the mic.”

Fast forward to 2017, and I finally got my shot at a college radio station. They gave me the freedom I’d always wanted — to connect a 1920s swing track to a modern punk banger and make it feel like they belong together. That’s the same spirit I’m bringing to my station here in Viseu now: different eras, different genres, all threaded together so we can can walk the same path together each time.
